Rebecca and Jim had told us about a really lovely new development called Lonesome Valley, that has some amazing rock faces for climbing. In case you didn't know it, Curt's favorite sport/activity has always been climbing. So we headed over to see what we could see. Here are some beautiful faces, very much like the ones Curt and I used to climb together. I pretty much stopped climbing when we had children, but Curt kept on for quite a few years, teaching MANY people to climb, and working as a private climbing guide for years.
After we prowled around on our own a little, we went into the sales office to see if we could find out a little more about the development, lot cost, etc. A really great guy named Thomas Bates showed us around some spectacular properties. It would be lovely if we were rich, but all we could do was enjoy the IDEA of building a place there, and enjoy Thomas, who was very personable and likable. We mentioned that we didn't have much time to look around, because we were planning to go to the music open venue in the middle of Cashiers, Groovin' on the Green, and meet some friends there. (Jim and Rebecca had told us about it a couple of days ago, so we thought we'd experience a little local color). Thomas said he was planning to go as well, so we all said we'd look for each other, and parted ways.
Curt and I got to the park before the Cothrans. We did see Thomas when we first arrived, and we greeted him, and he introduced us to his wife, Lisa, who was equally open and friendly. It was apparent that they were planning to meet someone as well, so we moved on and found a spot large enough for us and the Cothrans and enjoyed the band playing. When Jim, Rebecca, Madison and Isaac found us about 20 minutes later, they brought some dear friends they wanted us to meet....Thomas and Lisa Bates! We all had a great laugh....we could have been sitting with Tom and Lisa all along, because we were all waiting on the same people! We met several more of their good friends as well, and Curt and I really felt like locals before the night was over...sampling food, petting dogs, talking and laughing with new friends. We stayed and visited long after the band was finished playing.
Today, Saturday, June 21, is Curt's birthday. Happy Birthday, Curt! We started out with a delicious "birthday breakfast" that Bonnie so sweetly fixed for Curt, then packed up everything of ours from Bonnie's house. We headed for the Cothrans' to pick up our camper and spend a little more time with them before leaving. We got to hear Brendan practicing for leading worship at their church tomorrow, and we really wished we could stay an extra day to experience that. While Curt and Jim hooked up the pop-up, Rebecca and I talked business. I've noticed that on this trip, I don't have as much control over my eating choices as I do at home, and I'm not getting nearly enough fruits and vegetables. Rebecca is a distributor for Juice Plus+, a company that provides very concentrated amounts of whole fruits and vegetables in capsule form, to help bridge the gap between what we SHOULD eat and what we actually DO eat. After staying up late and reading about it last night (and that's one of the reasons I didn't post my blog!), I decided to become a distributor, too, so I can really work at getting all the nutrients I need as we travel, at the lowest price possible. So Rebecca got me all set up with that this morning.
Here's Curt putting the final touches on our rig, with a little help from Flint:
One more meal in Cashiers, taking Bonnie out to lunch, and off we went. There was quite a lot of congestion getting out of Asheville,
We're just a little ways into Virginia tonight, staying at a motel in Abingdon. We were both really looking forward to camping, but on Saturday night in this beautiful part of the country, all the campgrounds were full. We know we'll have better luck tomorrow night, as many people will head for home after the weekend. So one more night inside walls, and then we'll head for the open air tomorrow!
