Last Day of Music Camp

Day 32 of trip, Friday 7-11-14

The SummerKeys week wound up today. One last morning lecture on classical music, a last lesson with Marilynn Mair (I had my last lesson with Ralph Costanzo yesterday). They both helped me so much with my technique, knowledge of the fretboard and chord construction. And they gave me lots of strategies and direction for continuing to teach myself, since we'll be traveling for who-knows-how-long, and II won't be in one place to study under a teacher.

Between  lessons and classes I came back to the Inn during a break. It was great to be able to once more see the friends we made from yesterday's wedding party and to say goodbye. Here's Emily, the lovely new bride. Her husband, Peter, was loading the vehicles, so we couldn't catch him for a photo.

We've also had several great conversations with Emily's sister, Hillary, and her boyfriend Gene. Hillary is a flight attendant for Delta airlines. And Gene is a pro basketball player. Could you have guessed?

As they were packing all the wedding items into the cars, they left a lovely gift for Curt and me. We can't wait to sink our teeth into these lobsters, clams and mussels. And we'll think of our new friends with every delicious mouthful!

This afternoon's ensemble practice was the dress rehearsal for our student recital this evening. After that, while Curt waited on the dock to watch the lobster boats unload, I slipped back to Wags and Wool to finish my looking around and start some serious yarn buying! I had another great visit with Dee, one of the owners. I'm looking forward to meeting the other one as well...since she's a knitter and her name is Karen, she's got to be pretty neat!

A few of Curt's lobster trap photos are below. He didn't actually get to see them unload the boats today, but since we'll be around a little longer, we hope we can watch that another day.

Tonight's student recital went very well. First we watched a wonderful slide show with pictures taken by the SummerKeys photography class this past week. What terrific photos they took! Then our group played 6 pieces which Marilynn arranged just for our class of 12 mandolin students and 3 classical guitar students. We had a great time practicing and performing our pieces. There was so much variety and interest in the selections. Students who took instruction in other instruments (piano, cello, flute) followed. I can heartily recommend a week at SummerKeys for anyone who wants to improve their skills and musicianship. They focus on different instruments during different weeks of the summer...and I've talked to some people who have come several weeks in a row!

As we headed back to the Inn, we were treated to a pretty spectacular sunset in the west with the full moon on the rise in the east. This is an amazingly scenic place!

Moon rising over Canada (on the other side of the bridge).

This officially ends the part of our Great Adventure for which we had a plan and a loose itinerary before we left home. From this point on, we will be "winging it". We don't have any preconceived notions about our future travels. We'll take it a day or a week at a time. Or longer, if we find a place we'd like to stay for a couple of weeks or more. Right now we're thinking that we'll stay in New England longer than we originally intended. The weather is beautiful, the people are so friendly, the scenery is spectacular, and it just plain feels good here. Two more nights at the Inn on the Wharf, and then at least a week camping on Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada. Then we'll see what happens. We're taking suggestions, if you have any to offer!
